Unemployment Claims

Unemployment Claims is a weekly report released by the US Department of Labor that shows the number of individuals who filed for unemployment insurance for the first time during the past week.

It contains both seasonally adjusted and seasonally unadjusted claims numbers and also lists which states had an increase or decrease of 1,000 or more claims.

Unemployment insurance is a federal program designed to help, for a limited period of time, individuals who lost their job. These persons will receive cash benefits (unemployment benefits) during this limited period while they are looking for a new job.

The number of Unemployment Claims gives an important view on the health of the job market and of the economy as a whole.
